Flying Over Victoria Falls in a Microlight

This has to be the best thing I’ve done on my travels to date: flying over Victoria Falls in a microlight. This was the first thing I did in Livingstone, so it was the first time I ever saw the falls—by flying over them!

The flight starts by meeting your pilot and getting strapped in. You aren’t constricted in the microlight, so it’s okay to spread your arms out like a bird! You have a microphone in your helmet so you can communicate with your pilot throughout the flight.

The flight takes you down over the Zambezi River to Victoria Falls.

You can see the gorges and the falls from an eagle’s eye aerial view, which was pretty spectacular!

After circling around the falls a bit, you actually fly through the cloud of mist above the falls—the “Kiss of an Angel.”

Can you spot the hippos in this picture?!

After seeing Victoria Falls, the flight goes back up the Zambezi and flies over the park (Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park) for game sightings. I saw elephants (10-20 of them!), hippos, a fish eagle in its nest, and impala—all from the air!

If your pilot is as awesome as mine was, you might even get to steer the microlight for a bit!

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. You land back at the runway and can go view your pictures.

The Basics: Livingstone’s Adventures/Batoka Sky is the company that runs microlight flights. You can book through your accommodation and they will pick you up directly at your accommodation. The rate is USD $155 for 15 minutes, or $310 for 30 minutes. Flights are either in the morning or late afternoon.

You aren’t allowed to bring your own camera on the flight, but you can purchase either pictures or video (you choose beforehand) for $20. There is a GoPro mounted on the side, which I think is actually better than bringing your own camera, since it includes the microlight and yourself in the pictures! I opted for photos and got about 120 pictures from my flight on a USB.

Seeing Victoria Falls from a microlight was an unforgettable experience! It was one of the highlights of my whole trip to Zambia, and I would absolutely do it again!
