Visiting Carrie Bradshaw’s Apartment in New York City

For any fan of the TV show Sex and the City, you know that New York City itself seems to be a character in the show. One of my favorite things about the show is how the city, its neighborhoods and its people, is almost as important as the four friends and their lives. So if there’s one thing any Sex and the City fan should do in New York City, it should be to visit Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment!

Visiting Carrie Bradshaw’s Apartment in the West Village

Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment in the show is a rent-controlled steal, with a huge walk-in closet, on the Upper East Side. As said in the show, Carrie’s address is 245 East 73rd Street, between Park and Madison. But the actual apartment, a beautiful brownstone, is located at 66 Perry Street in the West Village!

Greenwich Village, and particularly the West Village, is a beautiful neighborhood with a very residential vibe. There are tons of beautiful apartment buildings in the area. The front steps to Carrie’s apartment are featured tons of times in the show.

In the first three seasons, the apartment used was 64 Perry Street.

For the remaining seasons, they switched to the larger (and more impressive) steps at 66 Perry Street.

66 Perry Street is an actual home to someone (it was bought for $9.85 million in 2012), so there’s a chain across the steps to prevent tourists from trespassing and taking those classic Carrie Bradshaw pictures.

The owners seem to be extremely private—understandable, considering that it is their house and loads of people visit and stand outside taking pictures every day (although, they had to have expected some of it when they bought the place?!). The house is blurred out on GoogleMaps, and the community won a campaign to keep Sex and the City tour buses from stopping at 66 Perry Street in 2008.

And don’t cross the chain, seriously. Apparently Carrie Bradshaw herself, aka Sarah Jessica Parker, got into trouble with the owners when she put shoes from her new collection on the steps (over the chain) for a commercial.

It’s perfectly legal to stand on the public sidewalk and take pictures, though! And in case anyone was wondering, the owners of the house were sporting a Hillary sign in their window when I visited at the beginning of October 🙂

If you’re in the neighborhood, you can also stop by the Friends apartment, another popular TV show filming location in the West Village!

And if you’re in the area, you can’t pass up the chance to stop by Magnolia Bakery, where Carrie and Miranda ate cupcakes in Season 3, Episode 5. The frosting is worth a trip to Greenwich Village alone. Any Sex and the City fan shouldn’t miss a trip!
