How to Visit Old Mulgrave Castle, North Yorkshire

I adore the Yorkshire Coast – it’s one of my favorite parts of the country! On my most recent trip to Whitby, I came across an attraction on Google I’d never seen before: Mulgrave Castle. I was so intrigued as, despite nearly a decade in Yorkshire, I’d never heard of it before! I went off to investigate and was delighted to find a surprisingly large ruined castle literally hidden in the woods, not far from Sandsend. This post has all everything you need to know about Old Mulgrave Castle!

The History of Old Mulgrave Castle

Old Mulgrave Castle dates back to 1214. It fell into ruin by 1308, but repairs were made over the centuries and a new keep. The castle was converted to a hunting lodge in the early 17th century, and then seized by the Royalists during the English Civil War in 1643. It was partially demolished in 1647 by the Parliamentarians to ensure it couldn’t be used strategically in the future.

In 1735, the Earl of Mulgrave built Mulgrave Hall nearby, and Old Mulgrave Castle became a scenic ruin. Over the following century, the castle was landscaped and remodeled – although parts of the castle, like the chapel, were in use until about 1830. Major renovations took place from 1995-1999 to preserve the ruins. Today, it’s a pretty spot for a wander or a picnic, with great views over the countryside. (The historical information here is from the information boards at the site.)

How to Get to Old Mulgrave Castle

Old Mulgrave Castle is located in Mulgrave Woods near Sandsend. The castle is not signposted – there are no directions here whatsoever. You will need a map to reach the castle! I recommend OS Maps as it shows the tracks and paths in the woods, but you could probably get by using GoogleMaps.

Park at the main car park in Sandsend (which is operated by North Yorkshire County Council), or East Row car park. Given the numerous negative Google reviews for the East Row car park, I would avoid parking here. Regardless of where you park, head down the street to Mulgrave Woods. The woods are only open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. They’re also closed completely in May, so be sure to time your visit right. Once inside the woods, follow the main track straight, keeping a map to hand. Eventually you’ll reach a set of stairs, which lead up to the outside of the castle walls. Follow the walls around to the left to reach the staircase and access the site.

The walk from Sandsend and back is 4 miles in total. It took me just under 2 hours, although I spent a fair amount of time at the castle, wandering around the ruins and taking photos! What I loved about this spot is how tucked away and peaceful it is. You wouldn’t really end up here unless you wanted to. And unless you saw it on a map or had visited before, you could walk all around the estate and the woods and not know it’s there. The phrase “hidden gem” is so overused in travel writing these days, but in the case of Old Mulgrave Castle I do feel like it’s a great description. Watch the reel of my visit below!
