I recently spent the night in Goathland, one of my favorite places in the North York Moors National Park. Despite visiting many, many times over the years, this was the first time I stayed in the village overnight! My home away from home was the Mallyan Spout Hotel, somewhere I’ve stopped by for food and a pint, but never stayed. Here’s my review!

The Mallyan Spout Hotel: Location
The hotel is located at the end of Goathland village, about a 5-minute walk from the shops. It’s only a bit further on from there to Goathland station, which was the stand-in for Hogsmede in the Harry Potter movies! There is a car park out front of the hotel – guests can park here, reception will ask for your plate number when checking in. There’s also a bus stop for the Coastliner 840 bus just outside the hotel. If you’re wanting to explore the North York Moors but don’t have a car, the Mallyan Spout Hotel in Goathland is a great option – it’s easy to get here with public transport! You’re also in a superb location for seeing more of the village and steps away from great views across the moors.
One thing to know, I have no phone signal anywhere in Goathland (I have Vodafone). This wasn’t an issue for me during my stay, as the hotel had excellent wifi! But it may be best to download maps or plan any routes in advance.
Checking In: The Valley View Suite
There are a variety of room types at the hotel, but my home for the night was the Valley View Suite. I went in without any real expectations and WOW – I was blown away! The suite was absolutely gorgeous. I had a huge (very comfortable) four-poster bed, two little seating areas, and a big bathroom with a walk-in rainfall shower. There’s a kettle for tea and coffee, and also a small fridge inside the TV stand, which I loved! The room décor was full of character, and really gave the room a charming vibe.
The real highlight though was, of course, the view. You could see out over the hotel’s lovely garden, all the way to the ridgeline of the moors in the distance! I loved watching the sunset here. The garden and view were lit with this gorgeous golden light, it was the best entertainment I could ask for!
Food & Drinks at the Mallyan Spout Hotel
I had a pint in the bar, ate in the restaurant in the evening, and had breakfast the next day. One of the things I liked was that they had dining options available in both the bar and the restaurant – you could choose whether you wanted a more casual or more refined setting. The bar is a cozy, relaxed spot for a drink or some food after a busy day of walking. The first time I ever visited the Mallyan Spout Hotel was after a very wet and cold wintery hike, where the lasagna and pint saved the day!
On this trip, I went for a burger in the restaurant, which was delicious! The pretzel bun made it a notch above your standard burger and it was a generous portion size. Sadly, I was way too full afterwards to go for dessert. They had a varied wine list in the restaurant, which I really enjoyed – how often do you see Romanian wine in a small Yorkshire village?!
Breakfast the next morning was excellent. There was a selection of pastries, fruit, yogurt, cereal, and juices which you could help yourself to, and tea or coffee was served to the table. The breakfast menu had a variety of classics, like avocado toast and eggs benedict. I opted for the full English breakfast and was not disappointed! There’s also the option of a complimentary prosecco, buck’s fizz, or bloody Mary, although I chose to stick with juice. I was full all day afterwards!
What to Do Around the Mallyan Spout Hotel
If you’re staying at the hotel, you can’t miss the chance to see Mallyan Spout, a waterfall down the hill. It takes just 9 minutes to walk down the path to the river, and hop along the boulders to reach the waterfall – I timed it. Of course, it takes slightly more time to walk back up! But all in all, you can get to the waterfall and back in less than 30 minutes. The foothpath to the waterfall starts right from the hotel.
There are plenty of other things to do in Goathland. You get a great view over the village, and out to the Lone Tree of Egton, from the hill directly opposite the hotel. Besides the station being a Harry Potter film location, Goathland was also transformed into Aidensfield for the Heartbeat series. You can wander around the shops, and hopefully see one of the steam trains at the station! The North Yorkshire Moors Railway travels between Pickering and Whitby, stopping in Goathland.
Goathland is the starting point for so many fantastic walks, you’re really spoiled for choice here. Make the short walk to Beck Hole, where you can see one of the smallest pubs in the country (the Birch Hall Inn), and the pretty Thomasson Foss waterfall. Another great hike is along the old railway line to Grosmont, which is a cute village. On one of my most recent trips, I did a 7.5-mile linear route to Saltergate and the Hole of Horcum through beautiful moorland scenery. All of these walks can be started right from the doorstep of the Mallyan Spout Hotel!
My Verdict: Would I Return?
I had such a lovely stay at the Mallyan Spout Hotel and I would happily return. Besides the superb view from my suite, the food and drinks were excellent and all the staff were really friendly and welcoming. It’s such a fantastic location in Goathland, and a top pick if you want to explore the North York Moors without a car.
