Hostel Review: Granny’s Inn Hostel, Sliema

Malta is a great place to visit for something a little “different” in Europe. Luckily, it’s also pretty budget-friendly as well! Saving money on accommodation is one of the best ways to cut costs for any trip, which is why I generally stay in hostels. For my four nights in Malta, I stayed at Granny’s Inn Hostel in Sliema. Here’s my full review!

Location: Granny’s Inn Hostel has an excellent location, right in the heart of residential Sliema. Everything is about a 10-minute walk away: bus stops for public transportation around the island, or the waterfront with its restaurants, bars, and the ferries. The hostel is in a quiet neighborhood, and I felt really safe around here. It is located across from a school, so during the week you will hear the noise of kids arriving in the morning. But that is literally the only fault I could find for the location. I loved being away from the hustle and bustle of the waterfront. But also within walking distance to lots of small, local bars!

Room: I stayed in a 5-bed dorm room for my 4 nights in Sliema. All of the beds had individual shelves, reading lights, and 2 plugs, which I absolutely LOVED. They also had lockers (I needed my own lock) for each person, a small fridge, and a makeshift desk with a chair. They had a load of extra blankets if you needed them, and even though the room wasn’t huge, it didn’t feel cramped at all.

Price: Granny’s Inn Hostel wasn’t the cheapest place I found, but it definitely had the best reviews and looked the nicest, and I’m really glad I chose to stay here. I paid €14.85 (~£12.75 or $16.65) per night, which was fantastic value for money. It was a really nice place and definitely worth the extra euro or two per night.

Bathrooms: The bathrooms at Granny’s Inn Hostel are spread out on each floor. There’s only 4 bathrooms for rooms in the hostel (one on the ground floor, one on the first floor, and two on the second floor), all set up with both toilets and showers. It was a bit annoying, as the bathrooms always seemed to be cleaned around 8:30am in the morning. Which doesn’t make sense, as that was when everyone was getting up and wanted to use them! So finding a bathroom was a bit tricky. But they were always clean and I don’t have any complaints besides the odd cleaning schedule.

Staff: I only met a couple of the staff while I was there, but everyone was really nice and friendly. Quite a few people were living and working there. So even if they’re not on shift, there seemed to be someone around if you had questions. They ask that you email them your arrival time, as their reception closes at 2:30pm—so if you’re arriving later, they’ll want to make sure someone is around. When I did that, I got a super long email with all the arrival information for Malta—airport buses, ticket costs, Google Maps, everything! It was super helpful and really set Granny’s Inn Hostel apart from other hostels I’ve stayed in.

Common Areas: Granny’s Inn has a lot of different common areas, which I really liked! There’s a kitchen on the ground floor, with a big table and a couch, which is great if you’re cooking your own meals. There are also two small balconies—one on the first floor, and one on the second floor. It was so nice to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine on our own balcony!! They also have a big common room on the second floor, with a big TV and a couple of couches. I didn’t get a chance to use it, but they have a rooftop terrace as well—and they’ve got a pool! It’s open seasonally, but a great reason to come back here in the summer months. I generally chatted to people in my room, as opposed to hanging out in the common room. But I feel like it wouldn’t be too hard to make friends here if you’re traveling solo.

Amenities: The hostel has wifi that works everywhere, which I was very happy about! They do have a laundry service (for a fee), and can arrange a few different types of airport transfers if you don’t want to worry about the buses. Note that the tap water in the hostel isn’t drinkable, so you’ll need to buy your own bottled water!

Security: Security was good at Granny’s Inn Hostel. There are generally staff around in the morning. When they close reception for the day, there’s a keycode entry for the big entrance door. We had a key for the door to our room, but to be honest we didn’t use it much—I just didn’t feel like we needed to. They had lockers for valuables in the room, which were a really nice size—not big enough for a full backpack or suitcase, but loads of room for valuables. The area is quiet and residential, and I felt really safe here.

Verdict: Would I Return? Yes. Granny’s Inn Hostel is an absolute perfect location. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to be based in Malta than this hostel in Sliema! It’s a great value for money, and plenty of common areas for hanging out. It might be a bit of a struggle to get a bathroom in the morning during the busy summer season, but there’s enough good things about this place to make it worth your while. I’d definitely recommend Granny’s Inn Hostel for a stay in Sliema in Malta! You can visit their official website here.
