Review: Old Court House B&B, Wooler

2022 UPDATE: Unfortunately the Old Court House B&B has closed permanently. I’ve decided to keep this review live anyway, just as it was a great place to stay!

I had a fantastic weekend away in Northumberland in March—this was my first real visit to this underrated part of the country! While most of the world is looking to stay local, a road trip to Northumberland is a great short getaway. For my trip, I stayed at the Old Court House B&B in the small town of Wooler. I was so impressed and our accommodation made a great weekend even better! As the country starts to open up after the pandemic, hopefully the travel industry can get back on its feet. Here is my full review of the Old Court House B&B in Wooler.

Location

The location for the Old Court House couldn’t have been better! The B&B is located in Wooler, with a large (free) parking lot right next to the building. It’s a short uphill walk to the shops and pubs, so it was easy for us to go out for dinner without having to worry about driving. Wooler itself is a wonderful location for exploring Northumberland—particularly if you’re planning on hiking in the Cheviot Hills. It’s about half an hour to drive to most of the must-see destinations in Northumberland like Lindisfarne (Holy Island), Bamburgh Castle, or Alnwick. The Old Court House is also a historic building and I loved seeing how it’s been done up. It was formerly a law court and police station.

Room

Our room at the Old Court House was simply lovely, we were in the Parlor Room for our stay. It was a double room with a terrace, which had its own bathroom. The shower was amazing, something I definitely appreciated after a long and wet day hiking in the rain in the Cheviot Hills! The heated towel rack was also a huge bonus for the same reason. The bed was really comfortable and there was plenty of space. We had a small outdoor area with table and chairs which unfortunately we didn’t really get around to using, but it was such a charming and cozy room to stay in!

Breakfast

The breakfast at the Old Court House was incredible. They had a huge selection of fresh fruits, cereals, yogurt, toast/spreads, juices, etc. All of this on top of a cooked breakfast—we both went for a full English breakfast both mornings. The food was so filling we didn’t really get that hungry for lunch! There is a real personal touch about the breakfast service, which made us feel even more welcomed. On our second morning, I actually got a free mimosa in honor of International Women’s Day! I can imagine breakfast will be done differently going forward, with new measures in place to minimize any possibility of spreading covid-19. But I’m sure it will taste just as incredible!

Amenities

Our double room had its own TV, as well as tea and coffee facilities in the room. There was wifi that worked well throughout all the areas of the B&B. They also had a very helpful booklet of local information and restaurants/pubs in Wooler, including which places you should probably book a table in advance. The Old Court House is also licensed as a small bar. They have a large lounge across from the breakfast room and check-in deck, so if you don’t want to go far for a drink you can get something right there!

Staff

The staff at the Old Court House were really what set it apart from other places I’ve stayed. All the staff we encountered were really friendly and welcoming. The woman who took our breakfast orders gave us a few tips on where to go, and remembered what we had done the day before the next time we saw her! They were also very accommodating when we ended up arriving about an hour after the check-in time due to bad traffic. Throughout our entire stay at the Old Court House, we could tell that the staff genuinely cared about us having a great time!

Verdict: Would I Return?

Absolutely. Considering how comfortable our room was, the delicious breakfast, and the friendly staff, this was an absolute bargain for the price we paid (just about £60/night thanks to an offer through Booking.com). I was sad to have to check out and leave! If you’re planning on visiting Northumberland, Wooler makes an excellent base and the Old Court House is the perfect place to rest after a busy day exploring. The entire experience was welcoming and cozy, and I would recommend the Old Court House to anyone planning a visit.

Planning Your Trip

Northumberland is a fantastic destination to visit in the north of England. I would strongly recommend having a car to get around the area, as your own set of wheels will give you so much more freedom to see more. The closest airport for Northumberland is Newcastle Airport, otherwise you can also fly into Edinburgh Airport. I use Skyscanner to find the best deals on flights. Probably the easiest way to get to Wooler by public transportation is by train to Berwick-upon-Tweed, and then to take one of the Borders Buses to Wooler. If you’re booking train tickets, I always use Trainline for the best prices on trains in the UK. Considering travel insurance for your trip? World Nomads offers coverage for more than 150 adventure activities as well as emergency medical, lost luggage, trip cancellation and more.

I was not compensated in any way for this staymy opinions are always my own.
