Walking in a Winter Wonderland: York in the Snow

Snow here in the UK is something of a big deal. At the sighting of just a few flakes, basically everything shuts down: schools, transportation, roads, etc. As a Minnesotan, who is used to very heavy winter snowfalls, I still find this pretty cute about living in England. Snow is one of the best parts of a Minnesotan winter! But the other week, we had real snow in York—as in big, thick, snowflakes, and snow that actually stayed on the ground! It turned the city into a winter wonderland for a couple of precious hours. Here are a few of my favorite photos from the major sites around town on this snowy morning!

Starting off in the Shambles, with just a light dusting of snow
One of my favorite views in the city!

This morning light on York Minster was just perfect!
There’s just a tiny bit of snow still on the sign…
The view from Precentor’s Court to York Minster is also one of my favorites
Dean’s Park looked gorgeous under a light dusting of snow
St. William’s College, behind the Minster, looked stunning
And then it started snowing!!
Look at how happy this dog is to be out in the snow!!
York really felt like a winter wonderland!
My next stop was Museum Gardens
St. Mary’s Abbey looked beautiful under a blanket of fresh snow!
The 14th-century Hospitium in Museum Gardens
The gardens of the Merchant Adventurer’s Hall were pretty quiet!
Clifford’s Tower on the snowy castle mound
I caught another flurry of flakes at the top of Clifford’s Tower!
York really was a snowy winter wonderland!

  1. Really fun story about the snow in York, Maja—as I just finished two days in a row of digging out in Minneapolis. Made me appreciate how snow is beautiful!
P.S.—My Yahoo email address (Richard3rdDuncan@, etc.) is based on the name of, I believe, a Yorkish King, Richard III, no?

    1. There’s been a crazy amount of snow in MN I hear! And yes, Richard III was brought up in Yorkshire and fought for York during the Wars of the Roses. I’ve been to his childhood home, Middleham Castle, in the Yorkshire Dales!
